With dark looming clouds above us we set sail from Vancouver, along the Fraser sockeye salmon migration route. In response to yesterday’s press conference the BC Salmon Farmers have said many things:
“It’s important to note that this particular virus doesn’t cause disease in salmon in British Columbia,” insisted Jeremy Dunn, executive director of the B.C. Salmon Farmers Association. “It’s actually very commonly found in the ocean.”Vancouver Sun
“PRV doesn’t cause heart disease in B.C. salmon, as fish have been documented living and growing with the virus, but without developing HSMI.” CBC
The BC Salmon Farmers Association said they are open to “meeting with the researchers from the Sea Shepherd Society The Tyee
“Members of the BCSFA are open to meeting with Sea Shepherd scientists to hear if they think there is a different approach to that of the leading government and university scientists, or if they can add to the expertise already working on projects, we’d like to see if there is a possibility for collaboration,” Undercurrent News
We will be following up on all of these things…

Safe and productive journey.
We have reached the point in history where black is white, yes means no, sick means healthy…
The only way forward to a good outcome is for the mass of people to join together and say ‘ENOUGH IS ENOUGH’!!!
Bon Voyage Alexandra + Sea Shepherd’ers!
Bon Voyage, Alexandra, fair weather. Was so proud to have finally met you on the Martin Sheen on Monday afternoon .
The deflect/deny/or fabricate and lobby Ottawa routine will not work this time. Published researchers who’s data trumps the pro farm fish harmful practices are sharpening their teeth. A cruise through the Ocosollo Channel and the Broughtons will reveal how wild fish migratory routes are being compromised. I live amongst the islands and am horrified to witness the impact of the current practices.
Thank-you for attending to this, Alexandra and the rest of the crew!!
Hi all on the SV Martin Sheen
Can you give and ETA off French Creek – we would love to boat out for some photos.
We are with you body and soul

Alex says sorry, won’t be near French Creek but likely at Heriot Bay Quadra on Sunday
It may not be readily apparent that the virus causes heart disease in farmed salmon because they don’t have to flee from predators, but saying “PRV doesn’t cause (HSMI) heart disease in B.C. salmon” is much like saying the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) doesn’t cause TB. ‘(While) most (TB) infections do not have symptoms, known as latent tuberculosis…about 10% of latent infections progress to active disease which, if left untreated, KILLS ABOUT HALF OF THOSE INFECTED’!
There was a time where ‘tuberculosis (TB) was the leading cause of death in Canada’, (and) ‘TB is still considered one of the deadliest infectious diseases, especially in developing countries….In 2014, 9.6 million people fell ill with TB and 1.5 million died from the disease’. And another problem: ‘almost 500,000 people developed MDR-TB (Multi-Drug Resistant-TB) in the world in 2014.’
I would like to know why you Americans would not study the Atlantic Salmon Farms in your own country first? I am sure you know Washington and Maine grow them.
